The Italian Friuli Venezia Giulia region to focus on a logistics platform for China and India

The Italian Friuli Venezia Giulia region commissioned a study to formulate medium-term strategies as concerns the region development, The strategy is to establish the Friulian port – the first in Italy in terms of traffic volume – as the main Italian terminal for trade with the East, within the framework of the so-called Maritime Silk Road, by exploiting its geographical advantages over Northern European ports.

“The Far East is our main target, and this does not include only China, but also India and its crucial market.” These have been the words of Massimiliano Fedriga, Governor of Friuli Venezia Giulia, while presenting in Rome the “Venezia-Giulia 2025. Strategies and actions for competitiveness” study, commissioned to the European House-Ambrosetti by the Chamber of Commerce that represents the former provinces of Triste and Gorizia.

“With our ports, logistic centers and the intermodal hub we are working together with Austria, Hungary and Central Europe in order to create a global logistics platform, while, as concerns innovation, the aim is to increasingly turn the major research organizations active in the Friuli Venezia Giulia territory into business and work”, added the Governor of the Region when referring to the two development pathways of the region.

It is well known that the heart of the strategy lies in the port of Trieste and in the special economic area that has been created around it, above all thanks to the initiative of Zeno d’Agostino, President of the Port System Authority. In fact, in the last two years, he has given a strong boost to investments in the port and in connections, especially rail ones, with the logistics center, and has developed a policy of alliances with German operators.

The strategy is to establish the Friulian port – the first in Italy in terms of traffic volume – as the main Italian terminal for trade with the East, within the framework of the so-called 21st  century Maritime Silk Road, by exploiting its geographical advantages over Northern European ports.

In order to revive the ancient Maritime Silk Road and bring more benefits to the relevant countries and peoples, China proposed in 2013 that China and countries along the ancient Maritime Silk Road would build together a new Maritime Silk Road of the 21st Century.

Now, also the Governor of the Region Massimilano Fedriga seems to have stepped in to support d’Agostino’s initiatives in terms of research, by promising to “work to specialize all our resources, but under a single direction”.

Fedriga announced the creation of a public-private Foundation that will centralize marketing and training activities. “The strength of our region is training, which is possible here like nowhere else, and we want to take advantage of it to attract the big names of the advanced service sector,” he reiterated.

Another important aspect on which the Governor focused is the branding of the region: “We started with Io Sono Friuli Venezia Giulia (“I am Friuli Venezia Giulia”) and we aim to promote the region with a single brand for each sector, from agri-food to tourism and research”.
